- Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
- L'Odeur by Radhika JHA (in french)
- Mariage à l'Indienne by Kavita Daswani (in french)
- The Way to Paradise by Mario Vargas Llosa
- Deadly Decisions by Kathy Reichs
- Paris to the Moon by Adam Gopnik
- Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
I think I'll start with the first one on my list, but after that, I won't follow any particular order, I'll just be following my moods as I choose my next summer book. What are you planning on reading this summer? And where? On a beach? In a tent? On the sofa in an air-conditioned house? I think that some of my reading will be done at the public pool, some on the beach, and all the rest on my sofa waiting out the hot provençal afternoon sun. A rarity in France, but our house does have air-conditioning :)

I've been meaning to read that David Sedaris book for quite some time. Your list looks wonderful; I should do one too...always makes it more fun when you know what you have to look forward to :)
And I was sad too about the LT announcement; haven't decided yet if I'll keep doing the posts anyway, but I just might.
Hi Meredith,
I'm delurking to warn you...if you start with #1 on your list, you may never get around to the rest. There's a very strong possibility that you're going to get hooked on Outlander and *need* to read the other 6 books in the series right away. :) The author is amazing. I wish I were discovering them for the first time!
By the way, I enjoy your blog so much. Your part of the world is gorgeous!
Stephanie
I've either read those or WANT to read those - good list!
Mario Varga Llosa is on my list.
I've read all of the books you have written in English-and enjoyed them all. I don't have a stack waiting for me as I have read most of what I have in my house. I am reading the new book about travel by Frances Mayes-she wrote Under The Tuscan Sun-and I am really enjoying it. I don't have any beach plans this summer for reading or any travel plans until September. I usually sit in the shade on our back porch and enjoy the view in between reading chapters of books. A real pleasure.
I was going to say waht Stephanie sadi. Once you read Outlander you list will change. There are several more in the series and you will want to read them.
Me Talk Pretty One Day is laugh out loud funny.
Oh, I love this idea Meredith! I may very well do a similar post on my blog, if I get around to it... But my list of summer reading, or at least of books awaiting to be read in my apartment, is EXTREMELY LONG! And there are still loads of other new books out there that I want to buy! I constantly have book wish lists on my desk, and I'm adding new titles to them all the time.
Anything David Sedaris is, as AA said above, laugh-out-loud funny, and Me Talk Pretty One day is a classic. Eventually you should try Naked too -- I couldn't keep the laughs to myself when I read that one!
I've been meaning to read Adam Gopnik's book for years now; I brought a copy over with me when I moved to France in 2002, and I STILL haven't gotten around to reading it. But that's what happens when you get distracted by millions of OTHER books when you work in a bookshop.
I don't know the other titles on your list, but I'm always intrigued to discover new authors.
I'll be working most of this summer (after being spoiled by the jours fériés in May, June and July are going to be REALLY LONG!). But I do hope to slip away for at least 2 weeks in August, down to Noirmoutier on the Atlantic Coast, to join my boy's family on their holiday. I'll definitely be bringing lots of books with me! List to be assembled as the months wear on... (Depending on what I read between now and then!)
Aack! I need to get my summer reading list in order -- the only one I know I'm reading for sure is the last Harry Potter :) .... gotta have something to read while my kids are splashing away at their swimming lessons!
I'm sad that Love Thursday is leaving too, but maybe I'll keep posting and checking some of the regular posters' sites.
Oh and thank you for your sweet birthday greeting!
Outlander is my very favorite book in the world. I have read the whole series and just love them. Honestly, I was a huge historical romance fan and then I read this series and nothing can compare to them now. They are romance novels, yes, but they are chock full of history and very well written as well. Enjoy!
I haven't heard of any of them. Not really planning on doing any reading- apartment is a mess and company is coming, plus work. Sigh.
Thanks for the list. I am, as always, out of books and love hearing about new (to me) authors. I read too much but, thankfully, I am quite happy to re-read. I've read all 6 books in the Outlander series at least 3 times. I couldn't afford to keep me in 'new' books. And I only read for an hour - 45 minutes while riding my exercise bike and 15 before bed!
You are going to have a great summer reading~ a wonderful selection of material!
i just got the sedaris book in the mail via bookmooch.com. it's way down on my list right now though as i now have so many good books. thank you bookmooch! i agree with what everyone has said about outlander. i love that series and indeed have the latest on my wishlist. why is it that the french place the titles of books the opposite way than english books? i've asked a few people in some french bookstores and they always look at me oddly and reply that they've never noticed that before.
I'll be interested to hear how you like the Reichs. I love the TV show Bones which is based on her work.
I've heard the Sedaris is hysterically funny.
I'm not familiar with the others but I admire your book list. I should make a plan for my reading this summer.
Hi - I came over from Scribbit - you have beautiful kids and an interesting blog - will be visiting often. A plus tard!
Wow! That's some list! I'm still trying to work through my spring reading list. Nothing quite as exceptional as your list.
Happy Farewell LT. I always enjoy dropping by your poppy fields, Meredith. I'll keep visiting. Love is still all around us, right.
Me talk pretty one day had me laughing from the beginning to the end.
I'm looking forward to meeting Diana Gabaldon this September at Bouchercon. It's being held in Anchorage this year--I was just working on a post about it in fact.
Me too me too! Make sure you get the rest of the Outlander series because they get better and better! I've just shipped mine back from the UK and can't wait to re read them!
Looks like a good list you've got there. I haven't read any of them yet, so let me know what your favourite is and I'll give it a go!
Dare I confess I'm reading Wine for Dummies?
: )
My list includes Kitchen Table Wisdom, Mao's Last Dancer and for my giggle fix: Mommies Who Drink. I'll be reading in our gazebo!
Cheers!
Oh, so jealous of the air conditioning IN YOUR HOUSE. Lucky!
Love this summer book list. I am keen to read the Sedaris as well. And after all the comments about Outlander, I think I shall have to grab my copy soon.
I actually have boxes of books arriving (after a great big whining at my blog about not having access to cheap english titles here) from friends and new blogging friends (very generous friends I might add)so I will soon have oodles to choose from. Then I shall make my own lovely stack!
Enjoy the reading.
I haven't heard of any of these books, but the thought of reading by the pool or beach sounds sooooo nice. So if you just move your towel over, and I'll join you on the French coast with my books, OK? :)
I put up a picture of my own, though it will take me longer than summer to get through all of them.
My husband studied with Kathy Reichs, and chuckles every time her books are mentioned. The facilities her characters work with are so impressive, while the little broom closets they worked in at the university are so woefully different.
