First Job, Worst Job, Dream Job

Not counting a few baby-sitting jobs, I took my first real job as a K-Mart cashier when I turned 16. I loved that job. I worked there, on and off, until I was 20. But my time there during my high-school years was the best. My best high school friend worked there, an old boy friend worked there, it wasn't very hard and once I moved up to doing the blue-light specials...the real fun started.

"Attention all K-Mart shoppers...." (strategic pause placed here)
"The blue-light is now flashing in our camera and jewelry department
where we are featuring an additional 50% off of
our already low, marked down clearance merchandise...
Be sure and have your purchases re-marked before leaving the area,
and as always, thank you for shopping K-Mart."

The camera and jewelry department was always a good place to roll the blue-light, because that was the department where said best friend worked. Old boy friend was in the hi-fi department, they didn't blue-light, so I didn't roll over there very often. We took certain liberties with the blue-light when there wasn't any management in the store, which was often the case at night. I particularly remember running a blue-light on bouncy balls and laughing hysterically with my friend somewhere down the Cheetos aisle. Imagine hearing this when strolling though a K-Mart:

"Attention all K-Mart shoppers....
The blue-light is now flashing in our toy department where we are featuring an additional 50% off of our bouncy balls...
Be sure and have your balls re-marked before leaving the area, and as always, thank you for shopping K-Mart."

I wonder if K-Mart still runs those blue-light specials? If they do, I know where I can get a job should I ever have to move back to the USA.

It woudn't be my dream job, though. Remember the TV show Quincy? He had a forensic assistant named Sam. Sam had my dream job. I wanted to work for the FBI as a pathology assistant, solving heinious crime. I was looking into pathology assistant schools, when love took me down an unplanned road to France. A couple of my worst job experiences have since happened here, but I don't know if I can blame it on the employer, or was it more my fault for trying to do something I wasn't meant to do?

My first job -- other than babysitting -- was working at Jack-in-the-Box. I have some pretty funny stories about that too. I'm going to do the Sunday Scribbling subject too, but I don't think I'll focus on the Jack-in-the-Box years!

I have twin 15 years old daughters. I am always talking to them about trying to decide what they want to study in college - what they really want to do with their lives. I am so concerned that they try to find the exact, perfect thing - the thing that will make the truly happy. I think that is because if I had to do it all over again - that is one of the things I would try to do - find that exact perfect thing that would fulfill me (like Art or music or research ...). I enjoyed this post - it made me think. See ya.

There is an old adage, which is, in a nutshell, "Do what you love" and do it well and you will find happiness. Grandmamom

Hilarious! I don't know if there are any more K-Mart stores around. They were bought out by Sears two or so years ago and most, if not all, are now called Sears Essentials. Incidentally, if you type in bluelight.com, it pulls up the K-mart website.

A great post! I used to love Quincy too - left a lot to the imagination, although I like the new CSI shows they do ten to show a bit too much sometimes. Don't know if I could have done pathology myself, too squeamish, but fascinating.
I love the poppy fields - beautiful!

This was funny! My first job was in a supermarket too, on the checkout. I absolutely hated it - probably because they didn't have "blue-light specials"!

My first real job was at a Haagen Dasz - we had amazing food fights after closing on nights when the owner was away.

I used to love Quincy too, but I'd never want to work in pathology. The mere thought makes me turn green.

LOL Gotta love it. I was at k-mart once and the guy made an announcement "The kathy ireland exercise video is on sale - men, but it for your wives - if it doesn't work you still have the video." lol People were busting up all over.
