Left or Right

Left and right? Left or right? Which way are you supposed to pay attention when you come to an intersection while driving down a road in France?

When you see this sign, you'd better yield priority to the cars coming from the right. Any cars coming from the left are SUPPOSED to yield to you, so if you are brave, just pull right out in front of them, they may or may not stop.

This sign means you are coming up to a round point or round about. The cars already navigating their way around this intersection have the priority, therefore you must yield to cars coming from the left. At no point ever should you see cars driving around one of these intersections clock-wise, they would be going the wrong way, well unless you were in England....but we're talking France here. Once you have successfully entered a round about, you have the priority over vehicules trying to enter into the traffic from the right. Remember this, as cars try to sneak in front of you more or less aggressively, as you drive around.

Here's a happy road sign for many French driver's. The road sign that gives them all priority over any cars coming either from the left or the right. French driver's unsurprisingly respect this sign, ignoring all others as they "fonce" on to their destination.

*"foncer" is a verb means to rush on or charge on. Something I have to do now, as I am off to play the French national anthem in front of the church in celebration of the 11 Novembre. Bon Week-end!

A few years ago a 'road stoppage' was achieved (I think in Poland) to protest something or other, by 4 cars circling the roundabout for hours.... no one would enter!

Same signs as in Norway, though I believe the Norwegian traffic is slower than the French :-)

ve a wonderful system called a four-way stop, where everyone has to stop and then you take turns to go, in order of first come first to go. So you have to note who got there first and go in that order. Surprisingly it works!

I am feeling too lazy to SS today, but I was thinking about talking about the political differences between "left" and "right" in France and the USA.

That was a little too heavy for a Sunday morning, though.

We have exactly the same signs!

Hard to visualize until you are actually driving and then it makes more sense. Or does it?

Ah, yes. I like this post. We have a new roundabout here but it doesn't work well with snow. The curbs are hidden, the plows scrape too much or too little and...Nice post!

I think I could have figured out the middle sign, but I would have been clueless about the top and bottom.

Hi! I enjoy reading your blog so much - I hope you don't mind that I've tagged you - no pressure to do it but I'd enjoy reading the results!

Thanks for clarifying all that! I have only been driving here for 8 years or so! When we first came here only one town had the roundabous with priority for those already on the roundabout - how I hated that town. Now most places have the usual rule - but there are still odd roads thathave the priority to the right rule - drives me mad!
